The Danakil Depression is often called “The Cruelest Place on Earth.” With temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C (113°F) and a landscape of active volcanoes and acid springs, it is not a typical vacation spot.
At Magma Flow Tours, based in Mekelle and Semera, our priority is ensuring that your expedition to Erta Ale and Dallol is as safe as it is spectacular. Here is our expert guide on how to stay safe during your tour.
1. Professional Security and Permits
The Afar region is a remote border area. For the safety of all travelers, the Ethiopian government requires mandatory security escorts.
* What we do:
Every Magma Flow expedition is accompanied by trained Afar scouts and local police. We handle all regional permits and coordinate with local authorities daily to monitor the security situation.
* Your Role:
Always stay with the group and follow the instructions of your lead guide and security personnel.
2. Managing the Extreme Heat
The biggest risk in the Danakil isn’t the volcano—it’s heatstroke and dehydration.
* Hydration:
We provide a constant, unlimited supply of bottled water. You should aim to drink 4–5 liters per day.
* Timing:
We schedule our hikes to Erta Ale during the late afternoon and return before the sun reaches its peak the next morning to avoid the most dangerous heat.
* Clothing:
Wear light, breathable, long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin from both the sun and the abrasive volcanic dust.
3. Navigating Erta Ale and Dallol
Walking on an active volcano or through acid sulfur fields requires caution.
* Toxic Fumes:
At the rim of Erta Ale or the springs of Dallol, sulfur gases can be strong. We recommend bringing a light scarf or a buff to cover your nose and mouth.
* Fragile Ground:
In Dallol, the salt crust can be thin. Stepping in the wrong place can result in contact with boiling acid water. Never walk off the designated path shown by your Magma Flow guide.
* Footwear:
Sturdy, closed-toe hiking boots are mandatory. The volcanic rock at Erta Ale is sharp and can easily tear through thin sneakers.
4. Health and Hygiene
Because the Danakil is so remote, medical facilities are non-existent once we leave Mekelle.
* First Aid:
Our guides carry basic first-aid kits, but you should bring your own supply of rehydration salts (ORS), anti-diarrhea medication, and any personal prescriptions.
* Food Safety:
Our professional field cooks are trained in desert hygiene, preparing fresh meals that are safe for international travelers.
* Vaccinations:
Consult your doctor before travel. While the Danakil is mostly malaria-free due to its dry heat, other parts of Ethiopia may require prophylaxis.
5. Travel Insurance
We strongly recommend that all guests have comprehensive travel insurance that covers emergency medical evacuation. Given the remote nature of the Afar region, evacuation to Addis Ababa or abroad is expensive if an accident occurs.
